Diagnosis: 
Area found between the “southern edges of the Kimberley Plateau and Arnhem Land areas of endemism and the northern boundaries of the Eastern and Western Desert areas. The area extends eastward to the base of the Gulf of Carpentaria” (Cracraft 1991: 214).
Type-locality: 
Riversleigh Queensland, Australia, 26°46'12.86"S 146°28'12.55"E.

Cracraft (1991) considered the Northern Desert to be the “most poorly defined of all the areas” possibly because this single sub-region consists of varying landforms each part of a different desert (i.e., Tanami and Great Sandy Deserts).
