Abstract:

Including his recent results as well as the most important references, the author makes an attempt at surveying the present state of knowledge concerning problems of the development, behaviour and host relations of the fly family Pipunculidae (Diptera), which parasitize in cicadae. After a brief characaterization of the family, the total developmental cycle is generally described. Egg laying and reproductive potency as well as duration of development and mortality of the stages are discussed. Statement are made concerning pupation and the imago (hatching, ingestion, life period with special consideration of activity and behavior patterns). Problems of voltinism and hibernation are mentioned as well. The survey is concluded by statements on host specificity, adhesion and change, and by a list of 26 Pipunculidae species and their hosts demonstrated so far.
