Abstract: | The 25 species of Cephalops known from the Afrotropical region are revised. The genus Cephalops belongs to the family Pipunculidae, a group of small to medium-sized flies that are known as parasitoids of Auchenorrhyncha during their larval stage.Abstract 2: The Afrotropical species of the genus Cephalops Fallen are revised. In all, 25 species are recognized from this region. Three species are described as new to science: C. inflatus sp. n., C. ugandensis sp. n., and C. splendens sp. n. C. mauritianus (Hardy) and C. intimilobus (Hardy) are considered to be synonymous with C. visendus (Hardy). C. reconditus (Hardy) is a synonym of C. obtusus (Hardy). C. lucidus (Hardy), formerly placed under Cephalosphaera, is considered to be a true Cephalops species. The phylogenetic relationship of the Afrotropical Cephalops species is discussed in a worldwide perspective. The male and female terminalia are illustrated for all species for which they could be studied in detail, and their geographical distribution is given. An identification key is presented. |
